Everything in me right now, my slowing fingers, my back straightened against my mattress, my limp body, says “sleep.” My eyelids say “close” and my heart says “slow down” but my mind refuses. It sends saltwater out of my tear ducts as it reminds me of how much everything is changing.

Decisions are being made, deposits sent. It all seems lovely, but in the words of that stupid boy who has lived in my head since I met him, “you won’t get these days.” In a few months, I won’t get to be a subway ride away from everyone I love. I won’t be able to walk 10 blocks to that home away from home after school everyday, especially not when I need company from at least one person I like after I’ve spent too many hours with others I don’t. I won’t get to randomly come over just to give someone- a friend, a mom- someone to cook for. I won’t get to watch their pets or younger siblings grow with them. I won’t get to watch stupid animal videos with weird teachers or sit in his office and cry or take a nap without a need for explanation. I won’t get to stress out at 4 in the morning when I have practice in 2 hours and we both haven’t finished writing our essays. I won’t get people to procrastinate with, or to buy ice cream with me in the middle of Winter. I won’t get to take advantage of dollar sales and Wednesday discounts. I won’t get these days anymore.

I may never be a subway ride away, but instead an overpriced MetroNorth ride away. I belong upstate now, no matter where I go. “Going home” will always lead to my parents in Brewster, but it will always mean the city. It will always mean where love is, but my love is split between the two.
